The painfully cold weather system that put much of the Midwest into a historic deep freeze was expected to ease Thursday, though temperatures could still tumble to record lows in some places before the region begins to thaw out.
Extremely cold, record-breaking temperatures are settling across parts of the Midwest after a powerful snowstorm pounded the region overnight Monday, and forecasters are describing the subzero weather on the way as potentially life-threatening.
The cold is revealing some of Kentucky's old infrastructure. Water Department crews responded to at least five pipe leaks Friday in Central Kentucky. One in Frankfort took a while to repair also because of the cold.
