Early summer heat wave continues
A Heat Advisory remains in place through 8pm Wednesday
Another Sizzling Day Across Central and Eastern Kentucky
It’s been a steamy start to summer, and Tuesday was no exception. With a big dome of high pressure parked over the region, afternoon temperatures surged into the low to mid-90s again, while humidity pushed heat index values over 100 degrees for much of the afternoon. A few lucky spots saw a brief pop-up storm, but even those only provided short-lived relief before the sun and heat took right back over.
Heat Advisory Continues Through Wednesday
Expect a repeat performance Wednesday with another day of blazing sunshine, limited breeze, and high humidity. Temperatures will once again climb into the mid-90s, and the “feels-like” temperature could hit 100–105° in some spots. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 PM Wednesday for the entire area, as this marks the fourth or fifth straight day of oppressive heat in many locations.
If you have to be outside for any reason, be sure to take breaks, stay hydrated, and avoid peak afternoon heat if you can. Those working or exercising outdoors should be especially cautious.
Slight Pattern Shift by Late Week
Looking ahead to the end of the week, we may start to see the heat dome shift a bit to the west and flatten out. This would allow for a slight dip in temperatures, with highs more in the upper 80s to low 90s and heat index values just under 100°—still hot, but not quite as extreme. The humidity, however, won’t budge much, so the air will still feel muggy.
With a weaker ridge overhead, we’ll also see slightly better chances for scattered afternoon thunderstorms Thursday through the weekend. Not a washout by any means, but any storm that pops up could produce locally heavy downpours. Longer range forecast models are hinting at a cold front next Tuesday, which could finally bring some much-needed heat relief.
