A hot August weekend on tap for the commonwealth

Afternoon highs should climb into the low to mid 90s across the board

Friday kept up the mid-August tradition of heat and humidity across Central and Eastern Kentucky. With a weakening front parked to our south we saw a few isolated storms popping up including in the Lexington area but overall sunshine was the star of the day. Highs hit the low 90s in the Bluegrass with upper 80s in the mountains but the humidity made it feel just a touch warmer. Consider this a warm-up act for what’s ahead this weekend.

Weekend Heat Wave Building
Saturday will feature a strengthening ridge of high pressure overhead, bringing plenty of sunshine and some of the hottest temperatures we’ve seen since late July. Highs will reach the low to mid-90s, and with the humidity, heat index values will flirt with the 100° mark. If you’re planning to be outside, remember to hydrate, apply sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade when you can. While a stray afternoon storm can’t be totally ruled out, the overwhelming majority of us will stay dry.

Hottest Stretch of the Summer?
Sunday and Monday look to be the peak of this hot stretch with highs in the low to mid-90s and heat index values in the 100–105° range. This will be a prolonged period of heat stress, so it’s possible Heat Advisories will be needed. Outdoor workers, athletes, and anyone spending time in the sun will need to take extra precautions. Rain chances stay very low with just an isolated storm possible.

Relief in Sight Midweek
A cold front could slide through by Wednesday, bringing better chances for scattered storms and knocking temperatures back into the upper 80s. Humidity may dip slightly as well — a welcome break from the sauna-like conditions of the first part of the week.
