A change in our weather pattern is on the way

After an unsettled weekend of weather across central and Eastern Kentucky with scattered showers and storms producing locally heavy rain and causing a few flooding issues, it was a bit quieter to begin the week. The slow moving upper level low off to our southwest  did keep enough moisture around for some clouds and a few spotty showers, especially across Southern Kentucky but overall it was a much drier day than what we have seen lately. With some afternoon sunshine working in, highs reached the mid-80s in most spots as a drier and hotter pattern looks to kick in the next few days.

As high pressure builds in from the northwest on Tuesday, we should enjoy a break from the active weather pattern we’ve dealt with across the region the last few weeks. As the upper low gets pushed off to the southwest, look for a mostly sunny and more importantly a dry day as afternoon highs climb back into the upper 80s, which is right around average for the middle part of July. While it will still be a touch on the humid side, an east wind should temper that a bit so it should be a pretty comfortable day for the middle of summer so enjoy that aspect of it.

It’s definitely going to feel like summer through the mid and into the late week as high pressure and some heat take hold of our weather across the Ohio Valley. With plenty of sunshine and mainly dry conditions, afternoon highs will climb back into the low-90s as a brief ridge builds into the area. Add a bit more humidity to the mix and you’ll definitely want to slow it down during the hottest part of the day as heat index values creep into the upper-90s and even above the 100 degree mark in a few spots. While this is just below heat advisory criteria, just make sure and hydrate properly if you have to be outdoors for any length of time.

The hot and humid pattern will stick around into the upcoming weekend as a weak frontal boundary drops into the Ohio Valley heading into Saturday. With all the heat and moisture around, a few scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible during that window but it doesn’t look like a wash-out by any stretch so most locations should be good to go for outdoor weekend plans. Just make sure to check the weather before you head out. Afternoon highs will continue to be on the toasty side with temperatures reaching the upper 80s to around 90 degrees and the humidity making it feel even hotter. A secondary front will follow the first one through the Ohio Valley Sunday and into early next week with more low end storm chances as the summer-like pattern stays in place.
