Quiet weather on tap for the mid-week

After a stormy start to the week Monday with a complex of storms rolling through the Bluegrass with heavy rain, lots of lightning and some damaging winds through the evening hours, things stayed a touch active across parts of the region Tuesday. With a cold front sitting off to our northwest and very high humidity levels (even for late July), we did see a few scattered strong storms across Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky during the afternoon hours as the boundary was very slow to move to the southeast. Temperatures managed to reach the upper 80s in most locations for afternoon highs but the very muggy air put the “feel-like” temperatures well into the upper 90s with a few locations topping the 100° mark especially across the west and southwestern part of the state.

We have some welcome changes on tap for the mid-week as the front off to the south, allowing for drier and less humid air to filter into the Ohio Valley. Wednesday is shaping up to be a banner day around the area with plenty of sunshine, comfortable humidity levels and afternoon highs reaching the mid-80s. You’ll definitely want to take advantage and spend some time outdoors if you can give the pleasant late July conditions.

A steady north to northeast wind will continue to push dry and comfortable air into the commonwealth on Thursday so our delightful weather looks to continue as we hit the home stretch for the month of July. Look for more sunshine area wide and afternoon highs remaining into the mid-80s. As the high drifts eastward, look for mostly sunny skies along with a return flow through Friday so temperatures should climb back into the upper 80s as we close out the week on Friday, which is right around average for the final day of July.

Kicking off August on Saturday, a wave of low pressure will slide by to our southwest so the chances for scattered showers and storms will be back on the table. While it doesn’t look to be a washout at this point, there will be some occasional heavy downpours in spots given all the moisture around so that’s something you’ll have to work around for any outdoor weekend plans. Afternoon highs will be held in check slightly with mid-80s in most locations. Look for more of the same heading through Sunday and into early next week as the wave of energy slowly works its way to our south so you’ll need the rain gear on occasion as highs climb back into the mid to upper 80s.
