Georgetown Police Warn Residents About Phone Scam
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The Georgetown Police Department is warning residents about a phone scam reported in the community involving someone posing as a police officer.
Police said an elderly resident contacted the department after receiving a call from someone claiming to be a law enforcement officer and attempting to pressure them into sending money to resolve a supposed legal issue.
Authorities said the resident did not send any money and instead reported the call to police.
Officials reminded the public that law enforcement will never call and demand payment over the phone, and officers will not request payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or payment apps.
Police say scammers often try to create a sense of panic or urgency to pressure victims into paying quickly.
Anyone who receives a similar call is encouraged to hang up immediately, not send money, and contact their local police department directly.
Authorities also urge residents to share the warning with friends and family, particularly elderly residents, who are often targeted in scams.
