UPDATE: Package left outside school was fake WMD

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Lexington Police say a suspicious package left outside of Tates Creek Elementary School on Wednesday morning was a fake weapon of mass destruction. Investigators say the woman accused of leaving the device there, 59-year old Sharon Melbourne, is believed to be mentally ill.

Investigators say Melbourne is well-known to police and that she’s reportedly been involved in similar incidents. Police say she lives near the school. She was arrested near the school on Wednesday and charged with Terroristic Threatening.

The fake WMD was first noticed by a school staff member who immediately reported it to police. The school was evacuated with faculty, staff and students going across the street to the Tates Creek Middle School gym. Police blocked-off access to the school campus while the device was checked-out and ultimately determined to be fake.

After the all-clear was given by investigators, everyone was allowed to return to the elementary school.
