Witness recounts seeing teenager place baby inside dumpster

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) – Testimony has begun in a trial involving two teenagers accused of discarding a newborn infant in a western Kentucky dumpster.

News outlets report Paducah repair shop owner Daniel Hodge was the prosecution’s first witness Monday in McCracken County Circuit Court. Hodge says he saw 18-year-old Trevon Elmore throw away something in a dumpster in July 2015 and walk away. Hodge says he looked inside and found a crying infant that still had its umbilical cord attached.

The baby was hospitalized and later released into state custody.

Elmore and a 16-year-old girl are facing multiple charges including attempted murder.

Elmore’s attorney says the teenager acted out fear and not out of malicious intent. The girl’s attorney says his client was confused from a seizure and wasn’t involved with discarding the baby.
