Winter Wonderland briefly returns to the Bluegrass

The snow should wash away quickly with several rain chances in the coming days

Winter’s Back, But More Rain is on the Way

Winter made a roaring comeback across Central and Eastern Kentucky today, delivering a widespread snowfall that left much of the region coated in a fresh blanket of 3 to 5 inches of snow. A few spots south of Lexington saw closer to 6″ plus. Roads were tricky early but improved through the afternoon as temperatures rose and we saw a transition to some light rain. With temperatures hovering near freezing we could see some patchy freezing drizzle in Central Kentucky overnight, which could create a few slick spots tonight. Areas farther south, particularly near the Kentucky-Tennessee border, missed out on the snow and instead dealt with a chilly rain.

This first system will be moving out as we head into Wednesday, giving us a brief break. However, don’t get too comfortable—we’ve got another system quickly on its heels. This next round of precipitation arrives late Wednesday morning and will be all rain. Temperatures will climb into the upper 40s and low 50s into Wednesday evening ahead of a cold front which will accelerate snowmelt. With additional rainfall expected Wednesday night, localized flooding could become a concern, especially in low-lying areas and along streams and rivers.

The rain moves out early Thursday morning, and cooler, drier air moves in behind it. Valentine’s Day is looking chilly but mostly dry, with some sunshine returning to wrap up the workweek.

Looking ahead to the weekend, another strong system will bring widespread rain on Saturday. Temperatures will remain mild, climbing into the low to mid-50s, but with heavy rain expected, the flood threat will be something to watch closely. Thunderstorms are also possible. By Sunday, colder air rushes in, and as the system exits, we could see rain transition back to some light snow showers. Behind this system, a true blast of winter settles in for President’s Day on Monday, with highs struggling to get above freezing.
