Winter Wonderland across Central and Eastern Kentucky to begin the week

Accumulating snow caussed plenty of issue on the roadways with more cold air to follow

Winter lovers got their wish heading into the King Holiday Monday as Mother Nature provided our first widespread snow of the season. The favored area for the highest totals has been Southern and Southeastern Kentucky with several inches falling into Monday and more expected Monday night as a secondary wave of low pressure helps to enhance the snowfall. A Winter Storm Warning is out for much of the south and southeast with a Winter Weather Advisory just to the north of that (including the Lexington metro area. Storm totals could range from 6″ plus across the far southeast with a bit of a gradient back toward the Bluegrass with a general 1″-2″ storm total around Lexington with locally higher amounts.

The focus now shifts to the Arctic air that will drop into the commonwealth for the mid-week. After the snow exits, clouds may linger for awhile on Tuesday but even with some sunshine afternoon highs will struggle into the upper teens for highs. This will set us up for a frigid start on Wednesday with lower single digit lows along with the possibility that areas with heavier snow pack could sneak below zero as skies clear. Even with fairly light winds, it won’t take much to knock wind chills down into the -10 to -15 degree range Wednesday morning so keep that in mind.

After a brief break on Wednesday, yet another wave of low pressure will slide in from the northwest bringing additional light accumulating snow chances to the area late Thursday and into Friday. Once that system clears into the weekend, it’s going to be a repeat performance with additional Arctic air pouring in through the weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday mornings could see low single digits for wake-up temps so it’s going to be a very cold stretch in the coming days so you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on the weather. Stay tuned to ABC 36 for the latest updates.
