Winter weather returns to the Bluegrass Tuesday
Impactful snow is possible across the northern half of the state with rain down south
Winter Returns: Snow, Rain & Flooding Threats Ahead
We’ve had a nice break from the snow and cold, but don’t let this mild stretch fool you—winter is about to make a big comeback across Central and Eastern Kentucky. This week, we’re tracking three storm systems that will bring a messy mix of snow, rain, and even flooding concerns.
Storm #1: Snow & Rain Arrive Tuesday
The first system moves in late Monday night into Tuesday, bringing accumulating snow to parts of Central and Northern Kentucky into the daylight hours, while areas south of I-64 will see mainly rain. If you’re in Lexington and along I-64 northward, expect slick travel conditions with several inches of snow possible. South of the Bluegrass Parkway, heavy rain could lead to localized flooding. A Winter Storm Warning is in place for Central and South Central Kentucky through Tuesday where we are expecting several inches of heavy, wet snow, while a Flood Watch has been issued for parts of Southern Kentucky given the heavy rain potential and possible high water issues.
Storm #2: More Rain Midweek
After a brief break Wednesday, the next system rolls in Wednesday night into Thursday. This round looks to be mostly rain, but with all the moisture we’ve had lately, rivers and streams will continue to rise. Flooding could become more of an issue, especially in Southern and Eastern Kentucky.
Storm #3: A Weekend Washout?
Friday brings a dry break with sunshine and highs in the low 40s, but another system arrives Saturday. Temperatures will warm into the low 50s, meaning more rain and a few thunderstorms as well. Some areas could pick up an additional 1-3 inches of rainfall, increasing the risk of high water and flooding. As colder air rushes in on the backside of this system, some snow showers could mix in by Sunday. The combination of legitimate rain and snow melt may lead to several inches of rain on already saturated ground so the concern for flooding along our area rivers is more concerning in the coming days.
