Winter Safety Tips for Holiday Drivers
According to a survey from AAA, 85.8-million americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home, by automobile. that’s 9 out of ten travelers.
Not all of those trips will be smooth sailing. It is December, after all, and winter elements can make things tricky for drivers in some parts of the country.
No matter where your travels will take you, hit the road prepared. It sounds so simple, but keep tabs on the weather. Conditions can change quickly, so if it’s a long-distance trip, check in periodically using a smartphone app when you stop for food or a restroom, and delay or reroute a trip if things look dicey.
AAA says drivers should keep at least half a tank of gas in the vehicle. Tires should also be checked for the proper inflation before heading out. Additionally, have an emergency kit with blankets, gloves, hats, food and water.
If a snow or ice storm leaves you stranded, stay with the vehicle. Don’t try to walk for assistance, it’s too easy to get lost in the snow and cold.
