Winter-like cold settles in for a few days
After a wet finish to the holiday weekend some unseasonably chilly air should hang around through Tuesday
It definitely felt like late November across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Monday as folks headed back to work and school following the long Thanksgiving weekend. With the passage of a cold front late Sunday, much colder air poured into the region with temperatures struggling into the upper 30s and low 40s for afternoon highs on Monday. These readings were a solid 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Sunday and the chilly air will hang tough into Tuesday.
The unseasonably cold air will hang tough for Tuesday as Canadian high pressure builds into the Ohio Valley. Temperatures will be quite cold out the door Tuesday morning with readings in the low 20s but the X factor will be the wind. Breezy west winds at 10 to 15 miles per hour will knock wind chill factors down into the low teens early Tuesday so plan on bundling up. Even with full sunshine expected throughout the day, afternoon highs will struggle to get into the mid-30s for highs with the wind chills down into the 20s!
The good news is that we will see a fairly quick change and shift back into some milder air as early as Wednesday as high pressure drifts to the east for the mid-week. This will allow winds to shift around to the southwest pushing milder air back into the commonwealth. With breezy conditions continuing, afternoon highs should surge into the upper 40s Wednesday after starting the day in the low 20s! This upward trend will continue Thursday as highs reach the mid-50s ahead of our next storm system.
We could definitely use some additional rainfall and much of the data is showing a wet start to December on Friday. With plenty of moisture coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, a good soaking rain is expected which should help us continue to chip away at the on-going drought. With the clouds and rain around, afternoon highs will level out into the low 50s Friday with more 50s expected over the weekend. Some of the data is indicating a secondary wave of low pressure bringing more rain our way Sunday and into Monday so we’ll keep an eye on that as the week wears on.
