Watch out for phony IRS debt scam

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ) – Kentucky Treasurer Todd Hollenbach says scam artists are at work again in Kentucky, calling residents and posing as IRS representatives.

The scammers are reportedly telling folks they owe money to the IRS, and threaten to take legal action if they do not pay right away.

“The IRS does not initially contact taxpayers by phone so if you receive a call or get a voice message from someone claiming to be a representative from the IRS threatening to take legal action against you, it’s a good bet it’s a scam,” Hollenbach said.

If you do receive a call like this, you can report it to Attorney general Jack Conway’s office of Consumer Protection at 888-432-9257 or visit ag.ky.gov for more information.
