Warmer weather on the way this weekend
Storms will be possible the next few days with a potential severe threat Sunday
After another cool start to the day we enjoyed slightly milder air moving back into Central and Eastern Kentucky Thursday. With winds shifting around to the south as a warm front approached from the west, afternoon highs climbed back into the low to mid-60s which is slightly above average for this time of the year. A few scattered showers moved in later in the day and this unsettled pattern will be a prelude of things to come for Friday and through the upcoming weekend.
The aforementioned warm front will surge northward into Friday bringing a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms but also usher in much warmer air. Temperatures will surge all the way into the upper 70s for afternoon highs to end the week so it will almost feel summer-like across the region. The best chance for scattered storms should be during the morning hours with much of the afternoon hours looking dry so it should end up being a pretty nice day overall.
Heading into the weekend look for more unseasonably warm air along with a few scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day Saturday. Afternoon highs should work back into the mid-70s and while there should be a few showers to dodge, it shouldn’t be a complete wash-out for any outdoor activities. just take the rain gear along just in case. The main focus continues to be a strong storm system that should move through the Ohio Valley on Sunday. Much of the data continues to indicate the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms late in the day with all modes of severe weather on the table. The Storm Prediction Center still has much of the region highlighted in the elevated risk for severe storms in the extended outlook but should narrow down the timing and placement over the next day or so as we draw closer to the event. Just keep an eye on the weather this weekend.
Showers should linger into Monday given the late arrival of the storms Sunday (which could carry into the overnight hours) along with temperatures back off into the low 60s. It looks briefly cooler to kick off April on Tuesday (no foolin) before another storm system brings more rain chances and warmer air by the middle of next week.
