Warm air returns along with an active weather pattern
Strong to severe storms may be possible late Tuesday
It was a picture-perfect start to the final days of April across Central and Eastern Kentucky! Sunshine and southwest winds helped send our afternoon temperatures soaring into the low 80s — several degrees above average for this time of year. Hopefully you found a little time to get outside and enjoy it, because the weather will take a much more active turn as we head deeper into the week. Multiple rounds of storms are lining up and some could pack a punch.
Storms Return Tuesday — Strong to Severe Threat
Our next big weather-maker arrives Tuesday as a cold front dives into the Ohio Valley from the northwest. With plenty of warm, moist air already in place, the atmosphere will be primed for scattered thunderstorms to develop especially later in the afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of Central and Northern Kentucky under a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk. Damaging winds look to be the primary threat, but heavy rainfall and even isolated hail can’t be ruled out. A squall line is expected to organize and roll through the area so make sure you stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
Unsettled Midweek with Heavy Rain, Flood Risk
After Tuesday’s storms, the cold front will slow down and stall out over the region Wednesday keeping the chances for rain and storms around. With several rounds of rain falling over the same areas, localized flooding could become a concern especially by late Wednesday into Thursday. Another wave of low pressure will ride along the stalled front Thursday likely enhancing the risk for additional strong to severe storms. Right now, damaging winds appear to be the main severe threat, but we’ll also have to keep an eye on the potential for isolated tornadoes and flash flooding.
Better Timing for Kentucky Oaks and Derby Days
As we head into Friday (Kentucky Oaks Day), lingering showers will still be possible — mainly early in the day. Thankfully, rain chances should decrease as we move deeper into the afternoon. By the time we get to Derby Day on Saturday, the weather looks fantastic! Sunshine will return, and highs will be comfortably in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees — perfect for outdoor celebrations. Even better, the nice weather looks like it will stick around through Sunday and into early next week.
