Upper level system brings cooler air and a bit of moisture late week

We caught a brief break Wednesday with some sunshine but more clouds and showers are possible the next few days.

We enjoyed a brief break in our recently wet weather pattern on Wednesday with a mix of clouds and sunshine across the area and temperatures pretty comfortable for late December. Of course visibilities were down a bit with some patchy dense fog at daybreak but the sunshine made quick work of that. The much needed sunshine helped to boost our temperatures nicely into the upper 40s and low 50s, which is slightly above average for this time of the year. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the quick break from the rain as changes kick in late week.

A much advertised upper level low to our west will slowly spin and through the Ohio Valley Thursday and Friday. These system generally pull colder air down to the surface for higher up in the atmosphere so expect some cooler temperatures to end the week. Highs should only reach the low 40s on Thursday with a few scattered showers on occasion. We aren’t looking at a widespread rain fall with most spots picking up a few hundredths of an inch if that.

Tg Futurecast

The core of the upper low should be right overhead by Friday so this will be our best chance of see a mix of rain and snow showers, with some locations seeing all snow showers for a period of time as afternoon highs struggle to get into the upper 30s. The best chance for any coating on the grassy areas should be to our west and remember that ground temperatures are pretty “warm” for late December so the impacts should be minimal.

Tg Friday

Heading into the final weekend of 2023, we should begin to dry out as temperatures stay cool behind the departing wave of low pressure. Other than a few flurries early Saturday morning in the far east, it looks like a dry afternoon with clouds hanging around and afternoon highs rebounding a few degrees into the low 40s.

Tg Fly

New Year’s Eve looks very seasonable with a light southwest flow ahead of an approaching boundary to our northwest so temperatures should climb back into the upper 40s under a mix of clouds and sunshine. Right now it looks dry and cool for revelers as they ring in the new year late Sunday evening. The start to 2024 on Monday is trending a little drier as the boundary early next week won’t have much moisture with it so we may see a few sprinkles or flurries at best with chilly temperatures in the upper 30s for highs.
