UPDATE: Second person charged in human remains case in Harlan County

CAWOOD, Ky. (WTVQ) – State Police say a second person has been charged with murder after human remains were found Tuesday in a wooded area near the Cawood community in Harlan County. Investigators say Wednesday morning, 26-year old Michael Curtis of Cawood was charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse.

Just after 8:00 p.m. the same day, Curtis’ wife, 30-year old Kayla Curtis, was charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse in the same case, according to KSP. The couple was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.

The remains were found around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday in a wooded area off of Mountain Oaks Subdivision near Cawood, according to State Police. The remains were taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification. KSP detectives say they’ve received enough information to believe the remains belong to a person who was reported missing. The case remains under investigation.
