Up and down temperatures on tap heading into the late week

Expect another cooler day Thursday before we rebound Friday as rain chances increase

It was a breezy and pleasant start to the first day of the spring season across Central and Eastern Kentucky despite a weak frontal system moving through the commonwealth. With sunshine early and a few scattered clouds during the afternoon, temperatures urged back into the upper 50s and low 60s even with our breezy winds shifting from the southwest to the northwest behind the departing boundary. Going forward it does appear we’ll be bouncing around temperature-wise in the coming days starting with a cooler Thursday.

The cool air behind the front that moved through Kentucky on Wednesday is lagging well behind so we should really feel the impact until Thursday morning. Once again temperatures should drop into the 20s for early morning lows and it will feel cooler than that with a bit of a breeze. That actually could knock “feel-like” temps into the upper teens and low 20s for a period early tomorrow. Even with some additional sunshine and scattered clouds, a cool east wind along with the overall cooler airmass will hold temperatures into the low to mid-50s for afternoon highs.

Heading into Friday our rain chances will ramp up a bit as a warm front arcs through the area and a wave of low pressure slides by to our south. Much of the data is showing the bulk of the moisture closer to the low down south, with just a few scattered showers here and there across Kentucky so don’t expect a wash-out. We will see a warm front arc through the Ohio Valley, which will help to boost our afternoon highs back into the low 60s! This won’t last long as the low pushes eastward and allows another cold front to move through, which will knock our highs down a solid 10 degrees heading into the weekend. The good news is that the weekend at least will be dry.

The start of next week looks breezy and mild as our next storm system cranks up to the west. With a mix of clouds and sunshine on Monday and a strong southwest wind, temperatures should surge back into the upper 60s with dry conditions so it should be a good way to kick off the week. The rain and storm chances really ramp up next Tuesday as the next system moves through and it’s that time of the year where we’ll have to watch for the potential for a few strong storms but confidence is low at this point. It’s just some thing to watch in the coming days.
