Unsettled weather on the way much of this week
It will finally feel like May with above average highs
After a mostly dry and pleasant finish to the weekend, the weather took a more unsettled turn as an upper-level low slowly drifted north from the Gulf Coast. That system brought widely scattered showers and storms to Central and Eastern Kentucky Monday, with a few heavy downpours in spots despite some breaks of sunshine and mild temperatures in the mid-70s. This pattern of on-and-off rain looks to stay locked in for much of the week, although we will manage to sneak in some dry stretches along the way.
Unsettled but Not Washed Out
Tuesday will see the upper-level low park itself right over our region, keeping the atmosphere unsettled. Scattered showers and storms will once again be on the radar, particularly during the afternoon hours as daytime heating ramps up. It won’t be a steady, all-day rain, but there should be enough coverage to keep umbrellas close at hand. Rainfall may be heavy at times, especially with slow-moving or nearly stationary storms. That raises the risk of minor flooding in poor drainage areas, though we’re not expecting widespread issues. Temperatures will hover in the mid-70s, which is about average for this time of year.
Midweek Brings Some Sun—and More Storms
On Wednesday, the upper low starts to shift northeast, allowing for a bit more sunshine to break through the clouds—particularly west of I-65. This will help bump temperatures back into the upper 70s and even near 80 in some spots. Still, the potential for scattered showers and storms will linger, especially across eastern Kentucky. The good news is we’re trending drier by Wednesday night as high pressure begins to build in from the west.
Warmer, Quieter Thursday Before More Rain Risks
Thursday could be one of the warmest—and nicest—days we’ve seen so far this year. As high pressure takes hold and sunshine returns, temperatures will surge into the mid to upper 80s, with a few spots possibly flirting with 90 degrees. That said, a pop-up storm isn’t completely off the table in the afternoon heat, but most areas will stay dry.
Friday brings the return of a slow-moving cold front approaching from the west, and while details are still coming into focus, we’ll be monitoring the potential for a few strong storms, especially late in the day. Temperatures will remain warm, holding in the low 80s.
Spring-like Weekend with Hit-or-Miss Showers
That front will stall out across the region this weekend, and with a few disturbances riding along it, we’ll need to keep an eye out for scattered showers and storms both Saturday and Sunday. It won’t be a total washout, but it will be one of those weekends where checking the radar before heading out will be a good idea. Temperatures will stay comfortably spring-like, with highs in the upper 70s.
