Unsettled weather hangs around into the mid-week

Scattered rain should end as light snow showers Wednesday as cold air returns

It was a dreary start to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky Monday after much of the region saw a good soaking rain during the early hours. Most locations picked up a good half inch of rain with higher totals down around the Lake Cumberland area which has been one of the “drier” areas of the commonwealth the last month or so relatively speaking so that was a plus. Clouds locked in through the day but a breezy southwest wind kept temperatures on the mild side with afternoon highs in the upper 50s.

More unsettled weather is on the way for Tuesday as a wave of energy slides in along with a cold front moving in from the west. You’ll need the rain gear from time to time with more scattered showers expected. Temperatures should remain on the unseasonably mild side as highs run back into the mid-50s for one more day as the front is forecast to move through until late in the day. Once it does, another shot of cold air is poised to roll back into the Bluegrass for the mid to late week.

Complicating matters into Wednesday will be a fast moving boundary dropping in behind the departing front with much colder air in place. This will set us up for the potential of some light snow showers Tuesday night and into Wednesday as temperatures only recover into the mid to upper 30s for afternoon highs, which is a significant drop after a few days of highs well into the 50s. Whatever falls should be fairly light with enough to coat the ground, especially into the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. With ground temperatures relatively warm, most of the possible accumulations will be on the grassy areas and elevated surfaces so the over impacts should be pretty low.
Tg Midweek
Heading into the late week it will definitely feel like the heart of December with cold afternoon highs in the low 30s Thursday despite plenty of sunshine around. Luckily the cold won’t hang around long as high pressure slides to our east by Friday allowing a southwest flow to bring moderating temperatures to the region. Highs should jump back into the low to mid-40s as we close out the week with more dry weather expected. Another storm system will make its way into the Ohio Valley for the upcoming weekend so it appears scattered rain showers will return so the rain gear may be needed as Christmas shopping ramps up with the holiday right around the corner. Temperature should be right around average with highs in the mid to upper 40s.
