Unsettled but mild weather sticks for the weekend

We enjoyed some beneficial rain to kick off December with more spotty showers on the horizon

It was a damp and dreary start to the month of December here in Central and Eastern Kentucky on Friday. With a wave of low pressure sliding into the Ohio Valley, steady rain fell during the early morning hours with roughly a quarter to up to a half inch of much needed rain around the area. Clouds remained in place throughout the day with some spotty showers and patchy drizzle hanging around. Despite the clouds and rain around, a strong south to southwest wind helped pushed afternoon highs  into the mid to upper 50s! The above average temperatures should hang around this weekend as we stay a bit unsettled for the next few days.

On Saturday an advertised wave of energy to our southeast will push enough moisture northward to bring some legitimate showers to the area, especially across Southern and Southeastern Kentucky. Rainfall totals could be close to 3/4″ or more in those locations with lesser amounts farther north and west including the Lexington metro area. It’s good news for that part of the state given the on-going drought across the commonwealth. Temperatures still look good despite the rain with afternoon highs reaching the mid and upper 50s.

The parade of low pressure centers will continue in earnest Sunday and into the early part of next week. While it shouldn’t be a wash-out any particular day, you’ll want to keep the rain gear handy in case you have to deal with a passing shower  when you are out and about. Expect a wave of energy Sunday, one on Monday and yet another on Tuesday as a clipper system dives in from the northwest. The early week systems should have much moisture with them and will bring a brief shot of some cooler air in by the middle of next week with afternoon highs dropping back into the low 40s before climbing back into the mid-50s next Friday.
