Tranquil weather settles in to begin June
Look for pleasant highs in the 70s through the mid-week
After closing out May over the weekend with a few showers down south and quiet conditions across the north, we kicked off the month of June on a mainly dry note across much of Central and Eastern Kentucky. A big complex of rain and storms across far Western Kentucky slid by to our southwest providing nothing more than a few high clouds this far east. With a weak front dropping in from the north, a few isolated showers/storms tried to pop up but overall it remained dry in most locations. Afternoon highs reached the upper 70s to around 80 degrees, which is pretty close to average for the first day of June.
A strong area of high pressure will build through the Great Lakes and head toward the Ohio Valley on Tuesday so look for a very pleasant early June day. Even with plenty of sunshine expected, temperatures will back off a few degrees as “milder” air filters into the area but it will still be a very nice day as afternoon highs reach the mid-70s. It should be a bit on the breezy side with winds out of the northeast at 10 to 15 miles per hour with occasional higher gusts. This should help push very dry air into the commonwealth so humidity levels will be very low.
The nice weather looks to roll along as high pressure dominates the Ohio Valley through the mid to late week. Look for sunny days and clear nights with an unseasonably dry air-mass staying locked into the area. Early morning lows should dip down into the low to mid-50s but with full sunshine and the late sunset, afternoon highs will recover into upper 70s on Wednesday before returning to the low-80s on Thursday. It should be a great stretch of weather for any outdoor activities, especially with the school year wrapping up here in Lexington mid-week.
We’ll start to see a bit of a return flow out of the southwest as we close out the week on Friday and head into the first weekend of June thanks to high pressure drifting off to our east. This will allow temperatures to climb back into the mid-80s for afternoon highs but it will also bring some humidity back in play. With some upper level energy sliding eastward along with a weak front well to our northwest, we could see a few isolated to scattered showers back in the picture late Saturday and into Sunday. At this point it doesn’t appear to be a wash-out by any stretch but you’ll need to check conditions over the weekend for any outdoor plans you have on your calendar. It will definitely feel more like summer with the warmth and humidity in place heading into early next week to go along with a few scattered showers and storms, especially during the peak warmth of the afternoons.
