Tranquil weather hangs on to close out the week
Look for a return of summer-like air over the upcoming weekend
It was a pleasant spring day across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Thursday as high pressure built into the region from the northwest. With a few scattered clouds blocking the sunshine out from time to time along with a breezy northwest wind, it felt a touch on the cooler side by mid-May standards. Afternoon highs did manage to reach the mid to upper 60s, which is about 8 to 10 degrees below average for this time of the year.
Closing out the week on Friday the area of high pressure will drift to the east allowing a return flow to kick in, pushing milder air back into the region. A weak wave of energy sliding through the region could produce a few scattered showers just to our north and west but at this point that activity should diminish before making it into Central and Eastern Kentucky. A few clouds may filter the sunshine out a bit but overall it should be a nice Friday as afternoon highs climb back into the mid-70s in most spots.
Our weather pattern will shift significantly heading into the weekend as summer-like air returns to the Ohio Valley. A warm front will arc through the region bringing warmer air back to the commonwealth, but also will increase our chances for much needed scattered showers and storms on Saturday. If you have outdoor plans you’ll need to check the weather before heading out. A few of the storms could be on the strong side especially across the northern half of the state where the Storm Prediction Center has a low end Level 1 severe threat with damaging winds being the primary concern. Afternoon highs should reach the low to mid-80s in most spots. The summer-like feel will really kick in Sunday with afternoon highs surging into the upper 80s with mainly dry conditions. It should be a good day for outdoor plans but you’ll want to take it a bit slower during the hottest part of the day given that it has been awhile since we’ve dealt with a bit of heat and some humidity.
Monday could be our hottest day of 2026 so far as the big ridge of warmth stays locked in across the Ohio Valley. With a mostly sunny day expected and any organized storm activity well to our north and west, afternoon highs may touch 90 degrees for the first time since last September, which would put us just shy of daily record highs. A frontal system that should be off to our northwest is showing signs of slowing down so Tuesday may end up being another mainly dry day with a few late day storm chances and highs in the upper 80s. As the front drifts into the area mid to late week, much needed rain and storms will move into the commonwealth as afternoon highs back off into the low to mid-80s with the clouds and rain around. This is good news as the latest Drought Monitor continues to show a moderate drought here in the Bluegrass region with severe drought through all of Southern and Eastern Kentucky so we definitely need to get some water in the ground soon.
