Temperatures moderate a bit into the mid-week

We'll see one more very cold morning before milder air returns

Tuesday was one of those beautiful days here in Central and Eastern Kentucky that you could enjoy if you were inside by a window looking out as the full sunshine in place did little to warm temperatures at all. With high pressure drifting in and a breezy west to northwest wind, afternoon highs only reached the low to mid-30s, which is nearly 20 degrees below average for even late November. Add in the wind and our “feel-like” temperatures were in the 20s much of the day. The good news is that we’ll see some fairly quick changes into the mid-week.

As the area of high pressure drifts through the commonwealth and to our east, clear skies will allow temperatures to drop into the low 20s Wednesday morning, even with a lighter southwest wind. There should be enough of a breeze where the wind chills will be a concern early Wednesday as they fall into the teens once again. With more sunshine on tap through the afternoon and that same southwest wind picking up and bringing milder air into the region, we should be in much better shape. Afternoon highs should surge back into the upper 40s despite the cold start.

We are still on track for some beneficial rainfall as we welcome December on Friday. An area of low pressure will approach from the southwest on Thursday pushing some clouds into the region in advance of this system as highs reach the mid-50s. The bulk of the rain should fall Thursday night and into Friday with some solid rainfall totals on the table. There is a good amount of moisture with this system so we should be able to squeeze out .50″-1″ totals which is great news with the on-going drought across Central and Eastern Kentucky.

It looks mainly dry to start the weekend Saturday as we’ll be in between storm systems. While the data isn’t totally synced up on a few additional waves of low pressure sliding through the Ohio Valley late weekend and into early next week, there is enough consistency to keep the shower chances in the forecast for Sunday and Monday with highs remaining in the 50s.
