Sweet forecast heading into Valentine’s Day
With more sunshine it should be a nice Wednesday with highs well into the 50s
It was all about location relative to the snow across Central and Eastern Kentucky early Tuesday with several of our southern and eastern counties being the “sweet spot” to pick up some light accumulations. While it took awhile to transition from the heavy rain of Wednesday evening over to snow, when it finally did it came down at a healthy clip. It was enough to lay some on the ground and cause some slick roadways in those areas. As expected the system was long gone with the sun returning by daybreak so the snow melted off quickly and we ended up with a nice afternoon. With a mix of clouds and sun, temperatures surge into the low 50s here in the Bluegrass while it stayed a little cooler in the south and east thanks to the melting snow adding a cooling effect to the air.
We are set up for a very “sweet” Valentine’s Day of weather across the area thanks to more sunshine and winds shifting around to the southwest as high pressure drifts by to our south. Afternoon highs should top out in the low to mid-50s, which will feel great for mid-February so you shouldn’t have any issue if you have Valentine’s Day plans during the day or Wednesday evening.
Later this week a series of “clipper systems” will dive in from the northwest bringing a few shower chances and possibly a few snow showers showers on the back end of the second system. The first wave should be far enough to the north to keep the majority of the moisture there with just a few isolated to scattered showers on the table. Temperatures look good Thursday with highs remaining in the mid-50s.
The second wave should track a little farther to the south, which could be a bit problematic as this may put us more in play for a few flakes into the weekend. The model data isn’t synced up with track and that’s something we’ll watch closely. For now, it looks a bit damp with highs in the mid to upper 40s Thursday before some colder air follows into Saturday. With highs only in the mid-30s a few snow showers will be possible before we dry out for the second half of the weekend. Temperatures jump back into the low 50s for highs heading into President’s Day.
