Supporters of Marsy’s Law want KY Supreme Court to rehear case

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WTVQ) – Marsy’s Law for Kentucky is asking the state supreme court to take up a 2018 constitutional amendment case again.

Marsy’s Law sought to expand the rights of crime victims.

In June, the Kentucky Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the wording presented to voters on a statewide ballot last November was too vague and the actual language of the 556-word amendment should have been presented to voters instead.

On Tuesday, Marsy’s Law for Kentucky filed a petition, asking the court allow the question to be placed on the 2020 ballot with the full text of the proposed amendment available to voters at each precinct.

“The decision has ignited a chorus of questions about the practicality of putting the entire text of a proposed amendment on the ballot and created uncertainty about the process by which the citizens of the Commonwealth and their elected representatives in Frankfort may amend the state’s constitution,” the organization said in a statement.

Marsy’s Law passed with 63 percent of the vote in November.
