Summer warmth helps fuels storms the next few days
We've enjoyed a great stretch of weather the last few days but we'll be dodging a few storms through the mid-week
After a terrific finish to the weekend weather-wise across Central and Eastern Kentucky with sunshine and highs in the 80s, we saw a repeat performance to begin the new week, even with a frontal boundary over the area. The combination of full sunshine and a nice south wind pushed afternoon highs into the upper 70s and low 80s across the board. Not too bad for a Monday and Tax Day as well. We could see a few hail producing storms through the evening and overnight with the boundary in the vicinity so keep that in mind. Our overall chances for a few storms will ramp up the next couple of days, especially on Wednesday.
Get set for another unseasonably warm day on Tuesday as afternoon highs make a run at the 80 degree mark, even with a few more scattered clouds around. While a spotty shower or storm may pop up early as the frontal boundary draped over the area pulls northward, most locations should end up being mainly dry for the day. The big severe threat will be well to our west on Tuesday but the Storm Prediction Center does have the northern part of the commonwealth under a Level 1 risk (out of 5) for the strong storm potential along that front.
Wednesday will be the day to be weather aware as a strong wave of low pressure moves through the Ohio Valley accompanied by a trailing cold front. While a weakening round of storms looks to be possible, the main severe weather threat should be later in the day as the cold front slides eastward. Based on the latest data all modes of severe weather will be on the table so you’ll need to keep that in mind. The Storm Prediction Center has much of Central Kentucky under a Level 2 severe weather risk (out of 5) so we’ll continue to monitor the situation heading toward Wednesday.
We’ll see a quick break in the action on Thursday with a mix of clouds and sunshine with afternoon highs into the low 70s. A secondary front will drift in for Friday and early Saturday with scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder possible. Temperatures will stay moderate into the low to mid-70s Friday before a decent shot of cooler air arrives just in time for the weekend. Afternoon highs may only reach the low to mid-50s with a few leftover showers Saturday morning and our southern counties with a passing shower on Sunday as a system slides by to the south.
