Summer-like temperatures for the final weekend of April
With highs in the 80s and mainly dry conditions, make some outdoor plans and enjoy!
Despite a warm front moving through Central and Eastern Kentucky on Friday it turned out to be a fairly nice finish to the week. We did have a few spotty showers associated with the front but they were few and far between. Many spots saw a mix of clouds and sunshine and with winds shifting around to the south, afternoon highs managed to sneak into the low 70s especially across the northern half of the state. The uptick in temperatures will continue this weekend with a summer-like feel to the air. With some scattered clouds at daybreak Friday morning, sunrise was very colorful across the commonwealth.
Saturday is looking like a mainly dry and warm day, although we may have to deal with some scattered cloudiness, which could mask the sun out from time to time. Despite the expected cloudiness, afternoon highs should make a run into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees thanks to a strong south wind helping to drive the warmer air into the state. With sustained winds at 15 to 20 miles per hour and gusts 30 to 35 miles per hour expect a windy day so keep that in mind.
The summer-like stretch of weather continues for the second half of the weekend and into the final few days of April as the ridge of high pressure and warmth holds serve. A weakening frontal boundary (which could cause some bigger issues with organized severe weather this weekend in the Central Plains) will eventually creep eastward and impact our weather late Monday. Until then afternoon highs will stay in the low 80s, a good 10 degrees above average for the end of April with a few storms possible late on Monday.
The aforementioned boundary will drift through into Tuesday with a few showers and storm possible which will knock out temperatures back a bit although we’ll stay in the upper 70s for highs. We should kick off May in style with low 80s for highs and low storm chances as we’ll be “in between” systems. Much of the data is indicating a secondary boundary dropping into the Ohio Valley next Thursday and Friday (Thurby and Oaks Day) so it could be a little wet and stormy during that stretch with highs in the 70s. At this point it looks dry and cooler for Derby Day but of course we’ll keep a close eye on it in the coming days.
