Stormy weather continues into the mid-week
Heavy rain and a few strong storms will be possible
It’s been a stormy stretch across Central and Eastern Kentucky, and Tuesday kept the soggy trend going. Scattered showers and slow-moving thunderstorms dotted the region, bringing locally heavy downpours and some minor flooding concerns, especially in poor drainage areas. With the thick cloud cover and limited sunshine, most spots struggled to climb out of the upper 70s and low 80s—well below where we’ve been recently.
Watching Wednesday: Muggy, Mostly Dry Early, Storms Late
We’re not done with the active weather just yet, but we are getting closer. A warm, muggy air mass sticks around on Wednesday with afternoon highs returning to the mid-80s thanks to a bit more sunshine. Much of the day will actually be dry, but a cold front will be on approach from the northwest. That sets the stage for an uptick in thunderstorm chances late in the day and into the overnight hours. The Storm Prediction Center places a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather from Lexington west and northwest, with a Level 1 risk elsewhere. The main concern will be damaging winds with any storms that organize into a line. However, since the storms may arrive after sunset, the overall severe threat could lessen due to reduced instability. Still, it’s worth watching closely.
Cold Front Brings Some Relief — But Not in Temperature
The front slides through on Thursday and could spark a few more showers or storms early in the day. After that, we finally say goodbye to the daily thunderstorm threat that’s dominated our skies. Don’t expect much of a cool-down behind the front, though. This isn’t a classic “cold” front. In fact, the next few days look increasingly hot and humid.
Summer Arrives with the Heat to Match
Friday wraps up spring with sunshine and highs in the mid-80s—pretty typical for mid-June. The Summer Solstice officially occurs at 10:41 PM Eastern, and right on cue, summer-like weather locks in. This weekend is shaping up to be a hot one, with highs soaring into the upper 80s and possibly low 90s. It’ll be perfect weather for the pool or lake, though the humidity will make it feel even hotter. Things look dry to start the weekend, but a few pop-up afternoon storms could return early next week as the heat lingers.
