Storms give way to cooler, unsettled weather mid to late week
Afternoon highs should remain below average the next several days
It was another active day across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, as strong to severe storms swept through the region once again. A potent low-pressure system and its trailing cold front triggered widespread thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds, heavy rain, and even a few isolated tornadoes. With several rounds of downpours moving through, flash flooding was a concern in spots — especially considering how saturated the ground already is from previous systems over the past week. While our severe weather threat winds down overnight, the unsettled pattern isn’t quite ready to leave us just yet.
Cooler and Breezy Midweek Pattern Sets In
As we move into Wednesday, the cold front responsible for Tuesday’s severe weather will exit to the east, but an upper-level trough will linger to our northeast. That system will keep us on the cool and breezy side, with some spotty showers possible throughout the day — though it certainly won’t be a washout. In fact, many locations will stay dry. Afternoon highs will struggle to climb out of the upper 60s to near 70 degrees, and with winds out of the northwest, it’ll feel even cooler at times.
Unseasonably Cool Finish to the Week
Thursday continues the trend of below-average temperatures and occasional spotty showers as pieces of upper-level energy rotate through. Highs may only reach the low 60s in some areas — a good 15 degrees below normal for late May. Friday looks like the pick of the week, as drier air filters in and sunshine returns. While it stays cool with highs in the mid-60s, it’ll be a pleasant and refreshing end to the workweek.
Memorial Day Weekend: A Mixed Bag
The first half of the Memorial Day weekend is shaping up to be quite nice. Saturday should feature plenty of sunshine, and with a shift toward high pressure, temperatures will start to rebound into the upper 60s and low 70s — ideal for outdoor plans. Unfortunately, the quiet weather may not last. Another system is expected to approach from the west late Sunday into Monday, bringing back the potential for scattered showers and perhaps a few storms for the second half of the weekend and Memorial Day itself. Keep an eye on the forecast, especially if you have outdoor celebrations planned.
