State Street Quiet after UK wins ‘Sweet 16’ game
As Lexington Police promised, there was heightened security among the crowds of several hundred fans. Police were in their riot gear and ready if celebrations got out of hand.
ABC 36 was told that at least one person was arrested Thursday night for public intoxication. Officials say there were some small fires, one of which the fire department had to put out. Overall, police say it was far from last year’s scene and they’d like to keep it that way as the team progressed through the tournament.
Police say that fans even included them in the fun by asking them for photos. Those pictures of fans with Lexington Police in riot gear are now floating around on Facebook and Twitter.
The party ended around 2 a.m. Friday when police asked the crowds to go home.
Shortly after, crews were able to come through and clean up, making room for yet another party this coming Saturday .
Officials say Thursday night’s late game and the cool, wet weather may have played a factor in the small number of revelers.
Police are preparing for and expecting a larger head count after Saturday night’s game, when the Cats will play Notre Dame in the Elite 8.
