Spring-like weather continues into the mid-week
Afternoon highs will make a run into the mid-60s once again Wednesday
It’s been a fantastic start to the final week of February across Central and Eastern Kentucky, with another unseasonably mild day. Thanks to plenty of sunshine and a steady southwest breeze, afternoon highs climbed into mid to upper-60s—nearly 15 to 20 degrees above normal for this time of year. The pleasant conditions continue into Wednesday with more warm temperatures expected.
A strong southwest flow ahead of an approaching cold front will help push temperatures once again into the mid-60s Wednesday afternoon making for another beautiful late-winter day. While the morning starts mostly sunny, high clouds will gradually increase through the afternoon as moisture builds ahead of the front. Despite the clouds it will remain dry for most of the day making for a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy the warmth for the 3rd straight day this week.
However, changes arrive Wednesday night as our next cold front pushes into the region. Scattered rain showers will develop late in the evening and persist overnight into early Thursday. While this system won’t bring heavy rainfall most areas can expect around a quarter to half an inch of rain. Temperatures will remain mild overnight in the low 40s before turning noticeably cooler behind the front.
By Thursday afternoon a few showers should linger for a bit as cooler air filters in. Expect highs to struggle to reach the mid-40s, making for a chilly and damp day compared to the warmth earlier in the week. A brisk northwest wind will add an extra chill to the air so it will feel even cooler.
The cooldown won’t last long, though. By Friday, high pressure will build in, allowing for a return of sunshine and another shift in the winds back to the southwest. This will help temperatures rebound into the low 50s, making for a nice end to what has been an active month of weather.
As we flip the calendar to March this weekend, temperatures will take another dip behind a dry cold front set to move through early Saturday. Highs will likely reach the mid-50s Saturday afternoon as the colder air lags behind the front a bit followed by a cool and quiet Sunday with highs in the low 40s. Looking ahead to next week, our roller-coaster ride of temperatures continues, with a quick warm-up back into the 50s by Monday and Tuesday. Dry weather looks to hold early in the week, but a wave of low pressure may bring showers and even a few storms toward the middle of next week.
