Scattered storms still in play into the late week
The activity should be widely scattered as afternoon highs stay hot
Wednesday brought a steamy and muggy start for Fayette County Schools as students headed back to class after summer break. Morning conditions were dry, but the combination of sunshine, clouds, and high humidity helped afternoon temperatures soar into the upper 80s. A few scattered thunderstorms bubbled up during the day, fueled by a frontal boundary lingering to our northwest. As has been the case recently, these storms were hit-or-miss but capable of producing locally heavy downpours in spots.
Thursday: Fewer Storms, Still Hot
Some patchy fog may greet early risers Thursday morning, especially in low-lying areas. The same weakening front will drift slowly into the Commonwealth, sparking isolated to scattered afternoon storms. With limited upper-level support, storm coverage will be lower compared to recent days—meaning many areas will stay dry from start to finish. Even so, the heat is sticking around, with highs climbing back into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. Humidity will push “feels like” readings into the mid-to-upper 90s at times.
High Pressure Brings a Hot Weekend
By Friday, what’s left of the front should fade away as high pressure takes over. That means more sunshine, fewer storms, and a surge of heat heading into the weekend. Afternoon highs will range from the low to even mid-90s, and although humidity won’t be extreme, it’ll be enough to send heat index values toward 100 degrees. If you’re planning outdoor activities, remember the sunscreen and stay hydrated—conditions will be prime for heat stress if you’re out too long.
Looking Ahead: Heat Continues Before a Break
The hot mid-August pattern holds into early next week with highs sticking in the low 90s and humidity lingering. Isolated afternoon storms may return during this stretch, but it won’t be until a stronger cold front arrives later next week that we’ll see more widespread rain and a possible cooldown.
