Road Crews Gearing Up For Black Ice Potential

Central Kentucky road crews are putting a plan together to combat any ice that forms Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Some of Monday afternoon’s rain could change to a wintry mix of freezing rain and snow Monday night, but even areas that don’t see the wintry mix could see some slippery roads.

After a rainy Monday, roads are wet and have standing water in areas.

As temperatures drop into the upper teens and low 20s overnight, some of this water will freeze.

The first areas to freeze will likely be bridges and overpasses, since cold air can cool the road surface from above and below the pavement.

The Department of Highways’ District 7 has road treatment crews staying over Monday night until midnight if needed.

The next crews plan to arrive at 5 a.m. Tuesday unless they are needed sooner.

Due to the rain Monday, crews were not able to treat the roads ahead of time.
