Richmond Police Warn Community About IRS Phone Scam

Richmond Police warned the community Tuesday about an ongoing phone scam.

The department had received several complaints about calls from a person who identified themselves as an IRS representative.

According to police, the caller disguised their voice and told the potential victim,  “Trying to reach you. This call is officially final notice from IRS Internal Revenue Service and the reason of this call is to inform you that IRS is filing lawsuit against you to get more information about this case file. Please call immediately…”

Investigators believed the various numbers used for the scam were through created through the Magic Jack system.

Police reminded the community that the IRS would not notify taxpayers with an automated message.

The IRS also said it would not ask for debit, credit or prepaid card information over the phone.
