Rain and storms return heading into the mid-week

After a beautiful Mother's Day of weather and a nice start to the week, the umbrellas will come in handy the next few days

We enjoyed a nice start to the new week Monday across Central and Eastern Kentucky, which was a bit of a carry-over from the perfect Mother’s Day weather to close out the weekend. With our next storm system approaching from the west, clouds did build in slowly but surely through the day but that did little to temper our warm-up with most locations in Central Kentucky making a run at the 80 degree mark for afternoon highs. Farther south where the clouds thickened up a bit earlier, it wasn’t quite as warm but still pleasant with low to mid-70s. With the higher clouds arriving around sunrise Monday, this made for some pretty photos across the region.

It appears the rain gear may come in handy over the next few days as a wave of low pressure slides through the Ohio Valley on Tuesday. Even though the severe threat is very low and the Storm Prediction Center doesn’t have our area in any type of risk, anytime you have an area of low pressure spinning overhead in the spring there can be a very small chance of generating a quick severe storm/spin-up tornado. This scenario played out just to our east across West Virginia last week but again is is a super low chance but worth a passing mention. Otherwise just look for occasional rain and storms with afternoon highs in the low to mid-70s on Tuesday.

A few scattered showers and storms may linger into Wednesday as the low departs to the east but hopefully the chances will wind down as we get deeper into the afternoon hours. Temperatures will once again be held in check thanks to some cloudiness around with highs mainly in the low-70s. The pick day of the week appears to be Thursday when we’ll be “in between” systems so we should enjoy plenty of sunshine and warmer temperatures as afternoon hours reach the upper 70s.

Another round of showers on storms should be on tap to close out the weekend Friday as this back and forth/unsettled weather pattern remains in place. The rain/storm chances on Friday could have an impact on the PGA Championship, which is being held just down the road at Valhalla near Louisville. Temperatures should be a bit warmer with more isolated to scattered storms this weekend and into early next week as some subtle waves of energy sliding through keep those chances in play. High temperatures look good at this point with low 80s possible this weekend and into early next week.
