Quiet weather to begin the weekend but a touch of winter looms
We could see a first few snowflakes of the season into early next week
After a beautiful week of weather across Central and Eastern Kentucky, we saw some changes to end the week Friday as a cold front moved through the region. With gusty southwest winds pushing milder air and moisture into the commonwealth, a broken line of showers and storms developed through the afternoon hours. This brought some heavy rain in spots and added some additional wind to the mix but we managed to stay away from any organized severe weather despite a few storms being on the strong side. The rain chances should wind down overnight with quiet weather returning quickly.
Saturday looks good across the area as we’ll be in between storm systems. With mostly sunny skies expected, afternoon highs should work back into the mid-60s, thanks to a southwest wind in place as the next system looms out to our northwest. It should be a nice day for outdoor activities across the region with ideal tailgating conditions ahead of the Kentucky/Florida game set for 7:30 PM at Kroger Field Saturday evening. Temperatures will drop back into the 50s during the game with clouds increasing as the game wears on so dress accordingly but it should be a nice night for football!
Big changes are on the way for Sunday and into early next week as the next wave of low pressure and cold front ushers in our coldest air of the season so far. Sunday looks blustery and chilly with a few scattered rain showers from time to time. Don’t expect much recovery in temperatures from morning to afternoon as highs struggle to get back into the upper 40s. The air should be cold enough from top to bottom for a few flurries and/or snow showers Sunday night and into Monday as upper level energy rotates through the Ohio Valley. It’s possible some of the grassy areas/elevated surfaces could see a light coating especially in the higher elevations of southeastern Kentucky but the impact should be minimal as ground temperatures will remain too warm. Highs shouldn’t even touch 40 degrees Monday with upper 30s in most locations along with a northwest breeze putting our “feel-like” temperatures down in the 20s so get set for that.
The colder air will stay in place for Veterans Day on Tuesday as afternoon highs try to slowly recover into the mid-40s. By the mid-week a southwest flow and a weak warm front should help boost temperatures back into the upper 50s, which is right around average for this time in November. Even with another frontal boundary moving in from the northwest, it looks mainly dry heading into late next week with temperatures backing off slightly with highs in the mid-50s. Some of the data is suggesting a low end shower chance about a week out thanks to a mid-level wave of energy passing by to our south.
