Our touch of Spring continues here in late February
After another beautiful day with above average temperatures, expect more of the same into the mid-week
Despite the chilly start on Tuesday it turned out to be another beautiful day across Central and Eastern Kentucky with sunshine, a light south wind and temperatures surging into the mid to upper 50s. It’s quite a recovery considering the accumulating snow just a few short days ago at the end of last week in addition to morning lows being in the upper teens and low 20s over the weekend. We did see a weakening mid-level wave slide through the region around daybreak Tuesday which provided some high clouds and added to some beautiful sunrise shots.
Our touch of spring here in late February is going to continue into the mid-week as we see more sunshine and a southwest wind picks up a bit as well. Winds should be 10 to 15 miles per hour with gusts occasionally 25 miles per hour plus. This combined with a good bit of sunshine should push highs all the way into the low to mid-60s, which is a solid 15 degrees above the curve for late February. Some high clouds may stream in late as our next storm system approaches from the west.
You’ll need the rain gear headed into the late week as our next weather maker brings a solid chance for rain and even a few storms to the area on Thursday. Winds should stay strong ahead of the approaching cold front so despite the clouds and rain around afternoon highs should reach the upper 50s to around 60 degrees. Rainfall totals should be in the half inch to 3/4″ range with a few spots with 1″ totals. The bulk of the rain should be out of the area Thursday night but a few showers could linger into Friday.
Some cooler air will drop in for the beginning of the weekend with temperatures much closer to average into the mid-40s. The data has been struggling with a mid-level wave diving into Ohio Valley but is a bit more consistent with a few shower chances and possibly a brief touch of wintry precipitation in the eastern mountains. This system should be in and out in short order which will allow another surge of unseasonably mild air for Sunday and heading into the final days of February. Expect highs back in the low 60s Sunday through Tuesday with our rain and storm chances increasing again toward the mid part of next week.
