Our quiet weather pattern continues the next few days
Temperatures will stay above average this week
We finally got a break from the deep freeze across central and Eastern Kentucky over the weekend as afternoon highs finally worked back well into the 40s giving us a chance to thaw out a bit. After plenty of sunshine Saturday a system sliding by to our south kept some clouds around Sunday but the sun returned quickly on this Monday with high pressure sitting to our southwest. It was a frosty start to the day with temperatures in the 20s but a breezy southwest win helped push afternoon highs back into the low to mid-40s, which is right where we should be to kick off this final week of January.
The aforementioned southwest wind will stay up into the early hours of Tuesday so expect a breezy start to the day with early morning lows in the upper 20s and low 30s. The wind may make it feel pretty chilly out the door so keep that in mind. We are set up for another pleasant late January day on Tuesday with plenty of sunshine and afternoon highs a few degrees milder into the mid to upper 40s. This is definitely a nice change of pace from all the cold weather this month so enjoy the break.
A clipper system will dive through the Great Lakes into the mid-week so we’ll continue to benefit from a southwest wind pushing more moderate air into the region. Wednesday should be a good one across the commonwealth with sunshine and highs around 50 degrees, which will feel even better considering all the January cold we’ve dealt with. An area of low pressure will be approaching from the southwest on Thursday so we may see some increasing clouds along with a late shower chance but afternoon highs will remain pleasant into the low 50s in most spots.
Heading into the final day of January on Friday plenty of moisture will stream in from the Gulf as the area of low pressure spins through the region. You’ll need the rain gear for sure as it looks like a wet finish to the week with steady rain on the table. Rainfall totals look pretty solid with locations picking up around one inch of rain with some areas close to 2″ especially in Southern Kentucky. The recent snow melt has been gradual so we shouldn’t see many issues with flooding other than some localized areas that typically see some high water in this scenario. The showers will eventually wind down on Saturday as we kick off February so conditions will improve as the day wears on. There won’t be any push of colder air behind the departing system so temperatures should remain pleasant for early February with highs in the low 50s!
