One more nice day before some changes to close out the week
After an amazing stretch of mid-November weather some beneficial rain is on the horizon
It’s been a really nice week of weather so far here in Central and Eastern Kentucky and Wednesday was no exception. With more in the way of sunshine along with a breezy southwest wind, afternoon highs surged into the upper 60s and low 70s which is a solid 10 to 15 degrees above average for mid-November. Even though the afternoon hours were cloud-free in most locations, a few high thin clouds around daybreak set us up for some colorful sunrise shots around the commonwealth.
Heading into Thursday expect more of the same as we squeeze one more unseasonably mild day with highs returning to the upper 60s and low 70s. You’ll definitely want to take advantage of this as big changes are on the way for Friday and the upcoming weekend.
The much advertised cold front will drop in from the northwest on Friday bringing some beneficial rain to all of Central and Eastern Kentucky. Given the on-going drought and the forest fire issues that continue to plague the eastern mountains, we’ll take a decent soaking even if it is brief. Much of the data is still showing most locations picking up around a half inch of rain with some localized areas seeing even more. This rain may have an impact on high school football playoff games Friday evening as the rain isn’t expected to wind down until the early hours of Saturday. Dry and cooler air will follow suit for the weekend with highs in the low and mid-50s.
Looking ahead to Thanksgiving Week, a strong storm system is lining up to impact the Ohio Valley late Monday and into Tuesday. This will have a decent slug of moisture with it along with some gusty winds so another round of beneficial rain looks to be on the way. Those that are heading out a bit early on Tuesday will probably encounter some wet road conditions along with the wind. The bulk of the moisture should be out of the area for the big travel day but much colder air may filter in by Wednesday so it could be a little chilly heading toward the holiday. Stay tuned!
