Nice weather to end the week but a wet weekend ahead
After a nice Friday to come, some heavy rain and gusty winds will be likely this weekend
It was just what the doctor ordered Thursday across Central and Eastern Kentucky…and that’s sunshine and milder temperatures. After a week full of low clouds and chilly air, the combination of the sunshine and a strong southwest wind pushed afternoon highs into the mid to upper 50s, which was a good 8 to 10 degrees above average for this time in December. Luckily there is more on the way to end the week before big changes arrive this weekend.
High pressure will hang on for one more day on Friday with more sunshine and a strong southwest wind keeping afternoon highs unseasonably mild around the 60 degree mark. As we get deeper into the afternoon, some high clouds may increase a bit ahead of our next storm system.
It looks wet, windy, and potentially stormy this weekend as a dynamic system runs through the heart of the Ohio Valley. Expect showers and a few thunderstorms to ramp up on Saturday with some heavy rain potential Saturday night and into Sunday. Rainfall totals could be in the 1″-3″ range, which would go a long way to chipping away at the on-going drought across the region. Any organized severe weather should remain to our southwest but a few strong storms can’t be ruled out in far Southern Kentucky.
The big question is whether we’ll see the colder air moving in quickly enough late Sunday as the moisture departs to develop a few snow showers in the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky. Right now much of the data supports snow showers in the eastern mountains with some snow on the grassy areas along with some accumulations above 2000 feet along the Kentucky/Virginia border.
