Much needed rain on the way to kick off December

We finally managed to warm temperatures up to close out November with showers on the horizon for Friday

It was a picture perfect finish to the month of November weather-wise across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Thursday. Just a few days ago we were dealing with very cold temperatures, even by late November standards but Mother Nature flipped the script and we ended November on an uptick with plenty of sunshine and milder air. Afternoon highs Thursday surged into the upper 50s and low 60s thanks to the combination of the sunshine and a strong southwest wind. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed the dry weather of late as we have some changes on the way.

A much advertised wave of low pressure will slide into the heart of the Ohio Valley into early Friday, bringing a much needed chance of some widespread rain. While rain totals won’t be off the charts we’ll take what we can get given the on-going drought across the commonwealth. In fact the latest drought monitor was updated Thursday with no major changes in status despite some rain a bit before Thanksgiving. While the rain over the last week or so helped lessen the forest fire concerns, we still need much more rain to alleviate the drought. Temperatures should stay mild into Friday afternoon with highs reaching the upper 50s in most spots as gusty south winds prevail.

We’ll shift into a more unsettled weather pattern this weekend and beyond as a series of weaker storm system slide through the region. On Saturday a wave to our south could throw enough moisture northward to produce a few showers especially across Southern Kentucky. Another wave of low pressure will follow suit quickly so this will keep the scattered shower chances in place for Sunday as well. Keep in mind we aren’t expecting a wash-out but take the rain gear along as we’ll be dodging a few showers from time to time.

The parade of low pressure centers will continue into early next week as a fast moving clipper system dives through the Ohio Valley into Tuesday and Wednesday. This will keep the rain chances around into the mid-week but will also finally cool us down a bit on the backside of the departing low on Wednesday. The 50s will finally go away for a few days with some brief chilly air working in. Highs may struggle to get out of the 30s next Wednesday.
