Much needed rain on the way to close out the week
With parts of the area now in a severe drought, we'll take every drop of rain we can get on Friday
It was another delightful day Thursday across Central and Eastern Kentucky capping off a wonderful run of unseasonably mild temperatures across the area. With more sunshine and a south to southwest wind, afternoon highs returned to the upper 60s and low 70s, a good solid 15 degrees above average for mid-November. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed this great stretch of weather as we have some big changes on the way for Friday and beyond.
A much advertised cold front will drop into the Ohio Valley on Friday bringing some much needed rainfall to the area. It appears that most locations should pick up a half inch or less, we could see a few spots with higher amounts but at this point any rain is good rain! The latest Drought Monitor just out Thursday continues to have Central Kentucky in the “moderate drought” with southern and southeastern Kentucky upgraded to a “severe drought”. Of course this is the part of the state that is dealing with the on-going forest fire issues so we definitely need the rain to close out the week.
Behind the departing front cooler and drier air will filter into the region for the upcoming weekend. As high pressure builds in from the west, afternoon highs should dance around the 50 degree mark with mid-50s returning into the day on Sunday. It looks like a chilly start to the second half of the weekend with Sunday morning lows dipping just below freezing in most locations.
Heading into Thanksgiving Week out weather pattern looks active as a strong storm system blows in from the west. Our rain chances will ramp up Monday afternoon with widespread showers expected through the day on Tuesday. With the area of low pressure spinning right overhead, it will be a breezy stretch so whatever rain we get will be blowing around.
If you are leaving early for the Thanksgiving holiday on Tuesday, it looks to be a wet drive here in the region so keep that in mind. Afternoon highs will be in the mid-50s Monday and Tuesday with much colder air forecast to wrap in behind the departing system. At this point much of the data has the moisture out of here before it gets cold enough for any wintry precipitation but we could see a few flurries on the back-side Wednesday. It definitely looks cold for Thanksgiving with afternoon highs struggling to get out of the 30s! Stay tuned!
