More wind and cooler into Thursday
Expect highs in the 40s but it will feel chilly with the persistent breeze
A strong low-pressure system spinning through the Ohio Valley made its presence felt with gusty winds and scattered showers across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday. Winds ramped up through midweek with peak gusts of 45 to 55 mph in some areas. After a brief taste of spring on Tuesday, temperatures fell steadily through Wednesday as colder air funneled in behind the system. Showers became more scattered into Wednesday afternoon with strong upper-level energy keeping the winds howling.
Scattered Snow Showers Early Thursday
As we move into the early morning hours of Thursday, lingering moisture combined with cold air will be enough to squeeze out some light snow showers particularly before sunrise. While most areas will only see a light dusting on grassy and elevated surfaces, the higher ridges in Eastern Kentucky—especially those above 1,500 feet—could see a bit more accumulation possibly up to an inch so a Winter Weather Advisory is our for Harlan and Letcher Counties above 1500 feet in Southeastern Kentucky. Temperatures will start the morning in the low 30s, but a brisk northwest wind gusting 30 to 40 mph will bring wind chills down into the teens. If you’re heading out early, be sure to bundle up!
Slow Clearing But Still Chilly
As the day progresses, we’ll see gradual clearing from west to east, with some sunshine making an appearance by the afternoon. However, despite the sun temperatures will struggle to warm, only reaching the low to mid-40s. The wind will still have a bite making it feel even colder. By Thursday night, winds will relax and skies will turn partly cloudy allowing temperatures to dip into the upper 20s to near 30 degrees.
A Milder Friday Before Weekend Showers
A quick rebound in temperatures is expected on Friday as a weak area of low pressure approaches from the west. Highs will climb back into the mid-50s under partly to mostly cloudy skies. While most of the day looks dry, a few scattered showers are possible Friday night into early Saturday as the system moves through.
Weekend Outlook: A Cool Start, Then Warmer Days Ahead
Saturday will see a slight cooldown behind the departing system with highs in the upper 40s to near 50. The weekend won’t be a washout but a few lingering light showers could stick around early Saturday morning before drier conditions return in the afternoon. After that, we’re looking at a stretch of beautiful spring-like weather. By Sunday, temperatures will trend warmer and that warming trend will continue into early next week. Highs will climb well into the 60s by Monday, with some spots possibly reaching the low 70s by Tuesday. If you’ve been longing for a taste of spring, you won’t have to wait much longer!
