More spring-like air for the holiday weekend
It sure won't feel like Christmas across Central and Eastern Kentucky this year
It was another very pleasant and mild Friday across Central and Eastern Kentucky for “getaway day” as the long holiday weekend is upon us. Even with some scattered clouds around once again, afternoon highs manage to work back into the mid-50s in most spots, a good 10 degrees above average for the first day of winter. The cloudiness did make for some beautiful sunrise shots across the area early on Friday.
A weak wave of energy will slide by to our north on Saturday, bringing a few scattered showers to the area. These should be hit and miss and will have very little impact on holiday travel other than a few wet roads in some spots. It will stay unseasonably mild with afternoon highs remaining into the mid-50s.
Christmas Eve on Sunday will be our nicest day for awhile as afternoon highs surge into the low to mid-60s, which will be just a few degrees short of record highs! It should feel great if you are out and about with sunshine and a strong south breeze helping to push unseasonably mild air into the commonwealth. This is a far cry from last year when we were in the midst of a bitter cold stretch as temperatures didn’t get out of the teens for afternoon highs on Christmas Eve after the big blast of cold air that arrive one year ago today!
We’ve advertised the rain chances for Christmas Day and we should be lined up for that on Monday. As an area of low pressure spins through the region expect some steady rain from time to time as afternoon highs remain mild into the mid to upper 50s. We could see some decent totals out of this system with around 1″ of rain possible. This would go a long way to chipping away at the on-going drought.
The rest of the holiday week looks a little unsettled with lesser rain chances but some rain chances none the less. An upper level low will slowly spin over the Ohio Valley through the mid and late week with some colder air and maybe a few flakes around by next Friday.
