More above average temperatures on the way to kick off winter on Friday

After a cold and snowy start to the week, we've rebounded nicely with highs in the 50s the last few days.

The calendar says late December but it really hasn’t felt much like it the last few days here in Central and Eastern Kentucky, including Thursday. Although temperatures were chilly of course to start the day, it was another unseasonably mild afternoon with highs surging into the mid-50s thanks to some sunshine and a light south breeze. Ironically the winter solstice occurs at 10:27 PM Eastern Thursday evening, officially kicking in the winter season. It won’t feel much like it Friday or into the holiday weekend as the milder air hangs on.

Winter Solstice

Expect more of the same for the first full day of winter on Friday as high pressure continues to sit tight across the Carolinas allowing for a light south wind to keep things mild. We should see a mix of clouds and sunshine with afternoon highs climbing into the mid-50s once again.

There is a weak wave of energy that will pass by to our northwest Friday night and into Saturday so a few scattered showers can’t be ruled out to kick off the holiday weekend. Highs should remain into the mid-50s before we see quite a surge in temperatures by Christmas Eve Day. As the next storm system gears up to our southwest, it should be dry and very mild with highs all the way into the low 60s so it won’t feel much like the holiday season!

Heading into Christmas Day you’ll need the rain gear as a wave of low pressure spins through the hear of the Ohio Valley. It will be wet instead of white with some steady rain and highs in the upper 50s expected at this point. With some upper level energy hanging behind the main low, the shower chances may linger in the days following Christmas with temperatures eventually cooling off toward the middle of next week.
