Milder temperatures on the way to kick off February

Afternoon highs should be a good 5 to 10 degrees above average the next several days

It was a dreary and cool finish to the month of January on Wednesday across Central and Eastern Kentucky as some low clouds hung tough behind a departing wave of low pressure. We did manage to see a few teasing peeks of sunshine early, which helped lift spirits a bit hopefully with better weather expected shortly. Even with the clouds around, afternoon highs managed to sneak into the low 40s in most spots and that upward trend will continue as we flip the calendar into February.

High pressure to our south will help push drier air into the region and also boost temperatures nicely thanks to a nice southwest breeze. It will be a welcomed change of pace with the sunshine actually making a return appearance plus the added bonus over above average highs into the low to mid-50s will make for a pretty ideal start to February.

Groundhog Day  is looking pleasant as well but there may be a bit more in the way of cloud cover thanks to a weak boundary dropping in from the north. It should be mainly dry although some of the data wants to squeeze out a sprinkle or two here and there. Even with the clouds around afternoon highs should still reach the low 50s in most spots. Of course any groundhogs around here would not see there shadow with the expected cloud cover, meaning spring is right around the corner although some of the longer range data is bringing more cold mid-month.

The start of the weekend is shaping up to be very nice with sunshine and afternoon highs in the low to mid-50s! This is much deserved given the dreary and wet weather last weekend and the bitter cold and snow we saw a couple of weekends ago so this will definitely be a nice change of pace.

Heading into late Sunday and Monday, both of the major models are trending farther south with the area of low pressure, which in turn means our overall rain chances are becoming less as we draw closer to that time frame. For now based on the latest data we’ll hold onto a stray shower chance Sunday night and into Monday for far southern Kentucky but if this trend continues…we may stay rain free through much of the 7 day forecast. Stay tuned!
