LPD: Counterfeit Bills Circulating in Central Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The Lexington Police Department is warning residents about counterfeit money circulating the Central Kentucky area.

Investigators with the department’s Financial Crimes Unit have seen more than a dozen reports in recent weeks of fake $100 bills being passed as legal tender.

The counterfeit bills are “prop money” typically used in movies and commercials. The bills look very similar to real currency, however they are marked “FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY” on the front and back of the bill. Other differences include the expression on Ben Franklin’s face and the feel of the paper.

The Lexington Police Department is advising everyone to use caution when receiving large bills and verify their authenticity.

If you do come across a counterfeit bill, contact Lexington Police at (859) 258-3600.
