Lots of sunshine to close out the winter season officially Tuesday

The tranquil conditions should stick around for the first few days of spring

It was a very cold start to the final day on winter on Tuesday across Central and Eastern Kentucky with early morning temperatures dropping down into the low to mid-20s with another hard freeze across the board. A few spots with the Kentucky Mesonet showed readings even in the teens early Tuesday. Despite the growing season not being “officially” underway, there are plenty of plants and trees in bloom so the last few mornings have been tricky with the threat to plants. With plenty of sunshine around through the day, afternoon highs recovered into the upper 40s and low 50s…a little under what was expected and the cool west wind made it feel a bit chilly for sure.

Winds will stay up out of the southwest into early Wednesday so we shouldn’t be quite as chilly to start the day with lows in the mid to upper 30s. Even with a cold front moving through during the day you shouldn’t even notice it as afternoon highs reach the upper 50s with plenty of sunshine! Winds out of the west will be breezy yet again with gusts upwards of 25 to 30 miles per hour through the course of the afternoon.

The core of the re-enforcing shot of cooler air will arrive into Thursday so temperatures will be back into the mid-20s for early morning lows before only recovering to around 50 degrees for highs so the roller coaster ride will continue. Our next chance for rain still looks to be on Friday but the overall threat appears to be more scattered than widespread now as the wave of low pressure driving our shower chances will keep the deepest moisture to our south now. Temperatures should stay in the mid 50s with clouds and showers around as we close out the week.

Tg Rain

The upcoming weekend looks dry but unseasonably cool as temperatures struggle to get out of the 40s for highs on Saturday even with some sunshine around. The most important thing to remember is that it will stay dry and highs should be better Sunday as we recover into the mid to upper 50s. A warm front will arc through the Ohio Valley Monday so expect a big surge with highs jumping up into the upper 60s. The bonus is that much of the data is now holding the rain and storm chances off until next Tuesday.
